I am someone without a computer science degree or tech experience at any company. The only tech experience I have is my brother helping me build my computer and watching him assemble it. My chosen career path diverged completely from any tech profession. I'm a professor of psychology and social worker. I have been in higher education for over 13 years and a social worker for 6 years. Getting into technology was not a space on my Bingo cards this year. Yet, one day as I was teaching, a student approached me and asked if they can use AI to write their essay. From there, ChatGPT was my tutor (more on that in later blogs) and it helped me attain the knowledge about&nbsp; AI and how to use it.&nbsp;&nbsp;AI's debut was spectacular. It was the first time that we could use natural language to communicate with machines, and they could talk back to us without us seeing a single line of code. The idea is that AI is supposed to alleviate the "burden" of work and have mundane tasks taken over by AI so that we have more time for other tasks. For example, AI has the ability to generate and post to social media for you so you can spend more time with business operations. The goal was to save you time and money. However, what we witness is AI authoring the internet allowing companies to eliminate positions that AI now manages.&nbsp;Then came the invention of no-code platforms, where people can create software using drag and drop or even natural language (vibe coding), and the AI can code it for you. This helps create software faster than traditional coding, but was released to the general public for anyone to use. As the non-tech community embraced vibe coding, they encountered fierce criticism. The complaints ranged from "you dont know what you are doing" to "stop doing it." Then the term vibe coding transformed from positive to derogatory. The backlash reveals a fractured landscape. Some people champion AI, others wield it as a tool, while many reject it entirely. Then, for the ones who don't use AI, they are being met with things like, "Well, AI is going to take your job," and "You will be left behind." In a time that Ai is suppose to&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Most of the information given to us is hidden behind a layer of tech jargon and pre-assumptions. This layer suffocates understanding with dense jargon and presumptive assumptions about what the non-tech community requires. Take AI courses, for example. Many of the courses all start off with "What is AI?" and "What is machine learning?" Then, recognize AI in everyday life. Then, go into safety, ethics, and maybe environmental impact. These courses help users use AI to "relieve mundane tasks" that were otherwise deemed a "burden," and focus on tools like ChatGPT and how to use them effectively.&nbsp; &nbsp; They then progress to learning about automations and how you can save money on your business. In 2025, we are building AI agents to help prompt autonomous tasks, using MCPs (Model Context Protocols) to connect to your apps. Prompt engineering diminishes while context engineering emerges. The goal is to have AI run your business, save time, and for you to make more money or do other things.&nbsp; On top of this, now we are told to think critically about the outputs and that we shouldn't trust everything AI says. All of these events share a common thread. These are calls to action being given to us by the tech industry to remain consumers of AI. Gatekeeping at best. True democratization would bridge the digital divide, not widen it while leaving people unaware they're trapped within it. In this case, the problem does not lie in the solution. It excavates a trench so deep that escape appears impossible.This is where 60 Watts of Clarity comes in. We are clearing a pathway to AI literacy to "achieve 60 watts of clarity."
